🔥Why Banks’ Failures Are Your Wake up Call

Two major regional U.S. banks – the Silicon Valley Bank in California and Signature Bank in New York – collapsed a couple of weeks ago….

Right away our government announced that it will NOT bailout the failed banks BUT that ALL banks’ customers can be assured that they will get their deposits back…..

Not only those who are covered by the FDIC insurance (which has a max of $250K per each depositor), but also those with millions of dollars deposited to this bank, which were mostly wealthy elites, venture capitalists and Chinese companies (although, supposedly, only U.S. citizens can be insured by the FDIC insurance).

If this is not a bailout, I don’t know what is…

And in order to bailout failed banks, government has to come up with more money… which means more printing money, even higher national debt (according to the U.S. Treasury Department, the current national debt of the U.S. is $31.3 trillion, which translates to roughly $94,000 per citizen), even higher inflation, and lower purchasing power of U.S. dollar….

    Auch….

Then last Monday stock shares of “rock-solid” Credit Suisse bank plunged and Swiss authorities helped cut a deal with its bigger rival, UBS, to acquire the troubled Credit Suisse bank at a marked-down price to calm the troubled financial markets and to re-instill investors’ trust in this “used-to-be” premier financial institutions….

If you ask me, I don’t think these “superficial” government-arranged bailout-like actions can help restructure financial markets.

    Here’s why.

As more facts started to come out about the Silicon Valley Bank’s operations and priorities, more and more people feel outraged with unconceivable incompetence and corruption of the SVB’s management and board of directors…

They had less than 10% of deposits covered by banking insurance!

Apparently, risk management was not SVB’s priority – its management didn’t have a director of risk management but had a director of equity and inclusion…

They were donating millions of dollars to their preferred political supporters (from both political parties but mostly democrats), who were influencing financial laws and regulations.

SVB didn’t have solid ethical and reliable operational guidelines….

Senior managers dumped millions in SVB’s stock just a few weeks before its collapse…. BIG red flag!

    But that’s not all…

In the lead-up to Silicon Valley Bank’s historic collapse in March this year, insiders at this California-based lender scooped up a record $219 million worth of personal loans (according to the Bloomberg News).

Can you trust bankers with your money after such revelations??

    I cannot.

And to be fair, NOT all regional banks are so corrupt and incompetent… but once you experience a rotten apple, it’s wise to be more careful and discerning.

And there’re more reasons for you to be alarmed right now.

Yesterday, the Fed (U.S. Federal Reserve) raised its key short-term interest rate by 0.25%, pushing ahead with its aggressive campaign to control inflation despite financial turmoil following Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse.

This move will further constrain banks’ lending and weaken the economy.

high Inflation + weak economy = stagflation

There’s not sugarcoating the challenging times we’re in right now….

But I am writing this NOT to stress you out but to wake you up and shake you out of complacency and status quo.

It’s not the time to choose what’s convenient, or familiar, or comfortable.

In the recent article about the banks failures, I shared the 5 Practical Lessons that will help you get well equipped to prepare for unexpected.

These banks’ failures are a wakeup call….

Be vigilant. Be observant. Be financially savvy.

NOBODY cares about your money more than you do.

And having money doesn’t make you good with money.

You can see it by all the millionaires who were not managing their risk by having cash deposits that exceeded the required FDIC insurance amounts at the bank that was not managed responsibly (to say the least.)

  • Story #4: Why Women Compromise?

    Story #4: Why Women Compromise?

My daughter was born in March of 1981.

I graduated from the University with a Physics degree in June 1981.

For my entire life, I wanted to be a physicist, but the “Good Old Boys’ Club” had taken that opportunity away from me, and now my husband and I had a fragile child to raise.

In September, I made one of the biggest compromises of my life. Instead of becoming a physicist, I became a software developer and entered the world of IT (Information Technology).

Similar to the United States at that time, if you were a woman who worked with computers in the former USSR, you were probably the only woman in the room. And unspoken rules were clear – do what you were told and don’t expect much.

Opportunities for advancement were few. Women were paid less than men.
My male colleagues performed many of the same tasks, but they were always paid more and treated better. Again, the unspoken rules…

I was not happy with these rules, BUT I felt that I had to compromise for my family, for my child. We needed a second income….

    Was it worth it?

    In my opinion, Yes.

Being a young mother, I would have made any compromises for my daughter.

By the way, when we went back to the doctor after my daughter’s first birthday – he seemed shocked…. He could not believe how healthy and happy my little girl was.

When I saw the doctor’s surprise, all I could think about was the day my
father told me that I could NEVER raise a special needs’ child and how I screamed at the top of my lungs, “Just Watch Me!”

OK, let’s go back to my professional career.

Through the years, as I held several jobs I didn’t like, working with people who didn’t want me to be there, I kept hearing the same things over and over:

    • “It’s not possible for a woman to do/be _____”
    • “Why don’t you just stay home and take care of your family?”
    • “That’s just the way life is”
    • “Don’t rock the boat.”
    • “Be happy with what you have, you’re comfortable, aren’t you?”

    My parents hated change.

    My husband hated change.

    I craved change.

The more I lived inside the “status quo”, the more I knew my daughter had very few real opportunities for a happy life…. And so, in spite of everybody else, I decided to leave the USSR.

My inner compass was tapping me on the shoulder again, whispering that it was time to stop compromising and start living!

Living in integrity with my dreams… for myself and my daughter.

One day, I told my mother-in-law that I didn’t want my daughter to go through what I went through, and I was going to leave the country.

She said, “Over my dead body, you are not leaving!”

    I replied, “I can’t wait that long!”

What values and beliefs helped you make the choices and decisions that shaped your life?

What was the biggest compromise you’ve had to make for your family?

What kept you in the “status quo” or “surviving” situation for longer than you wanted? And how DID YOU get out of it?

  • Vlog 5 Living Through Adversity: How to Manage Your Money NOW

Vlog 5 Living Through Adversity: How to Manage Your Money NOW

Money is on our minds… a LOT.

For some people, concerns about their financial health are as severe as their physical health (or even more.)

    And it’s not surprising….

Money is one of the main sources of worries, anxiety, and fear in a time of adversity.

However, there is no cookie-cutter approach to managing finances right now because we are all affected differently by the pandemic – some people lost income completely, others’ income was affected partially, and yet others have not lost income at all.

And so, what you do right now with your money depends on your current cash-flow situation.

If you lost income, it’s time to be strictly tactical and focus on managing “what is” – your PRESENT – the best you can (adhere to a budget, review discretionary spending, etc.).

If your cash-flow has not been impacted in a significant way, it’s time to be both tactical AND strategic so that you manage “what is” and plan for “what will be.”

In this vlog, I share my ideas for people in both “camps.”

    Let me know your takeaways.

  • Vlog 4 Living Through Adversity: A Simple Yet Powerful Practice to Change Your Emotional State

Vlog 4 Living Through Adversity: A Simple Yet Powerful Practice to Change Your Emotional State

Today I want to share with you a simple yet powerful practice you can use to change your emotional state…

Last week I spoke with a smart professional woman who wanted to know my opinion about her plans to invest in the stock market…

After just a few minutes into the conversation, I realized that she is NOT in a position to make sound financial decisions…of any kind right now.

The worst decisions I’ve ever made were those made from a place of fear.

This woman was so deeply affected by her fears triggered by the pandemic that it was clouding her thinking…making her consider unwise choices.

This conversation and my own experiences living through adversities made me choose the topic for today’s Vlog.

You know that fear is a natural human reaction to threat.

Our reptilian brain, the oldest of the three brains (the reptilian, limbic and neocortex), controls our body’s vital functions such as heart rate, breathing, body temperature, balance, etc.

And it also controls our survival instincts – Fight, Flight, or Freeze responses.

When we experience emotions like fear, anxiety, worries, and “what if” thinking – our body and mind get into a state of contraction and stress.

And if we stay in this state of stress and contraction for a prolonged period, we may compromise our immune system, get depressed, or experience other diseases.

    HOWEVER…

Fortunately, we can intentionally control our focus (and energy flow).

We can choose to shift our focus, which will help us shift our body and mind from the state of contraction (caused by fearful emotions) to a state of expansion and peacefulness.

One of the techniques I like to practice is living in a state of radical Appreciation.

So, what exactly does it take to live in this state?

In this Vlog #4, I share 3 aspects of this powerful practice.

Let me know your takeaways… What do YOU use to change your emotional states?

  • Personal Leadership in Time of Adversity: It’s Time to Embody Your Wisdom

Personal Leadership in Time of Adversity: It’s Time to Embody Your Wisdom

We’re living in unprecedented times – the health, economic, and financial adversity we have never experienced on such scale….

There is a colossal human toll, economic cost and financial cost of the COVID-19 attack all around the globe.

It almost feels surreal what is happening….

    It’s scary. It’s uncertain. It’s massive.

And it’s very human and normal to have moments of anxiety and fear…especially for our loved ones….

And here’re MY PERSONAL BELIEFS I want to express today.

It’s time for Personal Leadership. It’s time to fully embody the wisdom we learned and speak.

We must control what WE CAN CONTROL right now –

    • our thinking and choice of words,
    • our emotions (so anxiety doesn’t lead to fear and panic, and doesn’t lower our immune defenses),
    • our communication (with children, spouses/partners, friends, and clients), and
    • our finances (as much as we can under these circumstances).

It is our responsibility to follow the recommendations of “social distancing”, extreme personal hygiene, “shelter-in-place”, and whatever else local and federal officials require of us.

It’s also our responsibility to keep up, as much as possible, with our physical, mental and emotional health. We must be creative with all the ways we can take care of ourselves right now.

YES, it is indeed the time for PERSONAL Leadership.

Because each of us has this ability to lead from the inside out, to make wiser choices, to feel the fear yet do whatever it takes to keep your mental health in high gear right now… for your own sake and the sake of your loved ones.

And it’s an opportunity to express EXTRA love and appreciation, compassion, and courage.

I am in awe of invigorating spirit of common purpose and courage I see from so many people these days.

I am in awe of professionalism and courage of
nurses, doctors, grocery workers, food delivery personal,
post-delivery folks, some great journalists (who report facts and don’t turn their reporting into sensational or even fearful fake news),
our military personal protecting us no matter what,
our governments who lead us through these unprecedented challenging times….

This list can go on and on.

And so, I am deeply grateful for those AMAZING humans
who model courage without talking about it…
who model compassion through their actions…
who model faith when we deal with situations that feel unbearable…

I believe that this moment in time will change us.

    • It will change what we used to take for granted.
    • It will change how we work.
    • How we relate.
    • How we perceive our lives.
    • How we make and manage money.

And I also believe that we’ll get through this adversity
    more united,
    more appreciative,
    more compassionate.

    It will not be easy.
Nobody knows yet when this situation will turn around.

    But it will.

    And when that happens,
we’ll appreciate our “normal” more than ever before…
we’ll celebrate what unites us more than ever before…
we’ll be stronger and more resilient than ever before…
we’ll open our hearts more than ever before…

    THAT’s what I believe.
