7 Keys to Regain Control Over Your Money: Step #4 – Track your money and identify money leaks in your cash flow

Income, financial services, financial freedom, cash flow, money, paycheck, expenses

Do you sometimes feel like you’re living paycheck to paycheck and don’t know where your money went by the end of the month? You work really hard to make money but then spend most of it on just…living your life?

Regardless of how high your income is, what really matters is how much you make relative to how much you spend.

In other words, pay attention to how much money you keep every month.

If you’re earning $3k and spending $2k a month, you’d probably be less stressed out about your finances than if you’re making $8k but spending $9k a month.

I recently spoke with a professional single-mom in this situation. She works multiple jobs and takes home about $5,400 per month, which is well above the median household income.

Yet, she spends about $6k a month.

This is leaving her with no savings and a growing mountain of credit card debt.

Since she’s struggling to pay her bills and have been late with payments, she has seen the interest rates on the credit card debt jump to as high as 29%. Even worse, the financial stress has put a strain on health. She started experiencing migraines, anxiety and insomnia.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, you’re not alone.

Many people who have seemingly good income suffer from lack of “intentional money management”. Yes, situations like an unexpected job loss, medical bills or other financial emergencies happen.

But for the most part, it’s how you manage your cash flow – incoming and out-coming – that will make a difference in your financial life.

Here are some simple suggestions to help you track your money so that you get back control over your finances:

    1. Evaluate Your Income. How much money do you have coming in?

It may seem like obvious knowledge yet it’s not the case for many people.

You may have several sources of income – from part-time jobs, freelancing, your mate’s income, annuities’ payments, etc.

So, get really clear what you total monthly income is. Using one centralized account for your in-coming cash flow could be helpful.

Then you can decide how much money you want to keep every month (aka “pay yourself first.”)

The difference is what you can now allocate to various lifestyle expenses.

    2. Figure out where your money is currently going.

You can’t improve what you don’t measure.

Take a look at the last 3 months of your bank and credit card statements and categorize each of your expenses in a spreadsheet (you can create your own or find money tracking spreadsheets online).

That will cover everything purchased by automatic withdrawal, checks, debit or credit cards.

While you can’t see what you bought in cash, you can at least see how much cash you withdrew.

By looking at 3 months’ spending, you can get an average of monthly variable expenses like transportation/gas, groceries, and entertainment that aren’t always the same every month and monthly fixed expenses like utilities (electricity, water, internet, etc.), rent/mortgage, medical insurance premium, gym membership, etc.

You’ll also capture quarterly or annual expenses like some property taxes, home insurance, personal tax returns, etc.

However, that still leaves some spending that may happen once or twice a year like a summer vacation or holiday gifts.

You can divide what you spend on those annual expenses by 12 to convert them into a monthly amount.

For example, if you tend to spend about $4,800 a year on a family vacation, you would say that you spend $400 a month on vacations.

There are sites like mint.com and yodlee.com that can help you to continue tracking your spending online for free.

This is especially useful if you have lots of different accounts since they consolidate everything on one site. You can even get set up to be alerted by email or text message if you start spending more than you budgeted for in any particular category.

    3. Find where you can cut back.

Start with your fixed expenses and think about how you might be able to spend less on each one.

Shop around for lower cost insurance, cable, internet, and/or phone service.

Are you paying for insurance coverage, services, memberships, or subscriptions you don’t really need?

Can you be more efficient with your energy and water use to cut down on utility bills?

Have you taken advantage of coupons or warehouse clubs for groceries?

Can you refinance or negotiate down the interest rates on your debt?

And if you really need additional money, you might even want to consider working a part-time job, moving into a lower rent apartment, getting a roommate, or renting a room in your home.

Always be mindful of where you can cut your unnecessary expenses if you want to save more.

  • 7 Steps to Regain Control Over Your Money: Step #1 – Declutter your environments

7 Steps to Regain Control Over Your Money: Step #1 – Declutter your environments

7 Steps to regain control over your money

Let’s get tactical and discuss the steps to regain control over your money.

Having the right environments is super important. That’s why you hear a lot about decluttering.

If you live in a home that is filled with clothes that you don’t wear and don’t like, boxes with magazines and souvenirs, pieces of furniture that don’t add anything to the comfort of your physical space, YOU CAN change it!

If you don’t have an environment that supports what you want to think, feel, createand experience, remind yourself that YOU CAN change it.

If you have a relationship that doesn’t make you feel supported, loved, and appreciated, that doesn’t spark joy in you – YOU CAN change it.

If you feel that you got yourself into a “money prison” because of accumulated  debt, or unhealthy spending habits, or arguing with your partner about excessive spending and feeling insecure about your financial future – YOU CAN change it too!

You can CHOOSE to be clear and intentional with your choices and change what’s not working for you.

You can move away or towards a different environment, or you can create a new energy in your current environment.

And whatever you want to change, start changing NOW by letting go of what’s not working for YOU!

You want to make a big leap? Great, go for it!

Feel like starting with small changes? Awesome!  Baby steps are great! It’s how you implement BIG changes without feeling overwhelmed.

Life is what you choose to make of it.  Whether it’s your physical environment, relationship, work, or money.

Living with your focus on past mistakes drains your energy, deflates your confidence, blocks the flow of wealth, joy, and new opportunities in your life!

That’s why decluttering your mental space is super important!

I recall the time in my life when I felt that I must change my environments – my work, my marriage, my financial habits (e.g. shopping therapy) – because I felt empty inside…I felt just existing, going through life instead of living it.

BUT I was afraid to change.

“What if”, “not yet”, and “not now” thinking kept me stuck in the environments that felt like desert. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a support system at that time.

My FEAR of “not having enough”, not being able to support myself, feeling financially insecure if I leave my marriage, kept me in a prison of my own making for years.

Until one day…I decided to change.

First, I asked myself “What is the worst thing that may happen?” Once I reconciled with the answer to this question, fear of consequences couldn’t keep me hostage anymore.

Then I asked “Why it may not be true that I cannot be financially secure without a man?” And the answers started pouring from my heart onto my journal.

And then…I asked “What needs to happen NOW so that I feel more ease, joy, and excitement about my life?” And the answer was clear and loud…

    DARE TO CHANGE.

If you tolerate environments that make you feel overwhelmed, not capable, not supported; the environments that deflate your confidence and sense of personal power – don’ wait for a better time. Or better circumstances. Or a “prince charming” to save you.

DO NOT WAIT TO BE SAVED.   YOU ARE YOUR SAVER.

Change might challenge you. You might need to juggle some things and make a few adjustments…

BUT it’s possible. And often necessary.

So that you step into your full power. Get in control of your money. Charge of your financial destiny.

And the first step is to attend to your environments and declutter your space.

Next I’ll share the next step to regain control over your money.

Essential #8 for Creating Wealth and Success

Building wealth and Creating Financial Independence with Millen Livis

Many people were taught that once you get clear on what you desire and align your beliefs with your desires, then you can relax…it will come to you, no need to be in the “arena”….

At least that’s what many LOA mindset coaches and seminars still teach.

Some religious and New Age manifesters get so hyped about the metaphysical, spiritual aspects of our existence that they ONLY rely on and wait for God to take care of them.

I’ve met a few spiritual coaches and religious women who felt that they don’t need to do anything to live the life of their dreams, everything will be taken care of….

They ‘outsourced’ their financial responsibility to the Higher Power until…they faced serious financial challenges.

I had a client who was a pastor. When things were good, she was riding high, investing in her church, spending money on cars and furniture…. Everything was going fabulous. The only problem was that she didn’t have any savings….

When the US economy tanked in 2009 and her church was not able to support her lifestyle, she got really discouraged and “outsourced” her financial responsibility to…God.

She waited… hoping and praying…until she and her family lost their home.

    Very sad.

    Obviously, it’s an extreme.

    And there is another extreme.

I am talking about the ‘old school’ of making a living and receiving.

I don’t know about you but I heard from my parents again and again that “hard work and struggle are to be expected in order to succeed in life.”

People on this other end of the beliefs’ spectrum are focused on HOW more than anything else and often get paralyzed by the HOW conundrum.

These folks assume that a “survival mode” is to be expected, and often feel exhausted and overwhelmed by their endless To-Do list.

I trust YOU realize that you’ve got to have a happy medium.

You must do what you can with what you’ve got at the moment, because the Universe will not do it for you…it will do it WITH you!

You can thrive in the physical world as well as apply the spiritual principals like “Thoughts create things” and “What you focus on, expands.”
And that brings us to the

Essential #8 for Creating Wealth and Success:

Be Open to RECEIVE Wealth and Abundance.

So, what needs to take place for you to RECEIVE Financial Wealth?

For most people RECEIVING Financial Wealth requires the following 5 steps:

    1.  Make a Decision and Commit to it wholeheartedly.

In other words, you must first decide that you TRULY want to live prosperously and commit to it.

Face it…….a few times in the past you said ‘I want to make more money; I want to be wealthy”!

    Yet not much changed…. YES?

You must be sick and tired of your OLD STORY, of the small and powerless version of you…

You’ve got to get inspired and energized by your desires, your dream life. That’s why I emphasize the commitment to yourself.

    2.  Manage any resistance that may come up.

Resistance often happens once you start making changes. It may show up in self-doubts, fear, procrastination, anxiety, self-criticism…. The key is not letting your resistance derail or stop you…. You’ve got to keep going.

    3.  Take Action and do what you can with what you’ve got at the moment.

You may need to upgrade your skills, or get a new job, or change your money habits, or get a coach, or meditate and exercise daily, etc. Don’t wait for SOME day – baby steps in the right direction will create a forward-moving momentum in your life. THAT is how you leap forward!

    4.  You must GIVE in order to RECEIVE.

Giving is a form of action when you apply your talents, knowledge and experience to make impact in the world and, in the process, receive the financial reward. The bigger the impact of your actions, the bigger the reward.

    5.  Expand your Capacity to RECEIVE.

Some people have inner blocks that prevent them from receiving wealth and abundance. They lack the capacity to RECEIVE.

These folks have been conditioned (through family, religious or cultural programming) to give yet have challenges with receiving.

When they receive money, they feel that they need to spend or give it away.
They don’t feel that they deserve to be wealthy.

Or they simply don’t feel that it’s possible for them to be wealthy – even when they get money, they assume that it will not last.

Some don’t believe that anyone will be willing to pay them for their services. They don’t feel that they are good enough….

And sadly, many link their perception of self-worth to ‘having’ or ‘not having’ money. These feelings trigger such emotions as sadness, fear, gilt, shame….

If ‘having’ or ‘not having’ money is linked to your perception of self-worth and confidence – you will experience a continuous roller coaster and you will feel defeated and weak.

You must internalize your true specialness – your divine specialness, something that you don’t need to show, to prove or to defend.

And coming from that place, you can choose to see money as a spiritual mirror and driving force of your creativity.

This will help you see everything in a better perspective and become more grounded and successful.

One more thing about expanding your capacity to receive…

Practice ALLOWING instead of chasing and forcing.

Once you OPEN YOUR MIND AND HEART TO THE POSSIBILITY that YOU CAN co-create whatever you want in your life, abundance will flow to, through, and from you naturally.

Don’t outsource your well-being to anyone or anything. YOU are the captain of your life.

  • Essential #6 for Creating Wealth and Success

Essential #6 for Creating Wealth and Success

It’s been said that “what you want, wants you.” There is an ‘acorn’ seed inside you that wants to emerge.

The challenge is to FEEL and ACT congruent with your desires BEFORE you receive and experience them in a physical form.

While your beliefs and feelings exert a very powerful force in your life, they
don’t fully determine what you can or cannot receive because there is another factor that determines your outcome – ACTION.

The Essential#for Creating Wealth and Success is
ACT Congruent with Your Desires and Never Give Up on Your Dreams.

It has been my experience that you can receive abundance and wealth even before you fully believe in yourself and your vision, even before you believe it’s possible for you.

You don’t have to be “fearless and doubtless” to act on your desires. You can choose to take bold actions to achieve your vision, which then will activate the feeling and generate the energy necessary to make it happen.

    You can LEAD with Action.

I did it a few times in my life.

When I was looking for my first Wall Street job.
When I founded my investment company.
When I made a decision to become financially independent.
When I published my first book.

I felt fear. I had doubts. My beliefs were lagging….
BUT I didn’t let the fears and doubts stop me from taking actions.

Fear is one of the main reasons that stops people from taking action. Many are afraid “to take risk”, “lose it all”, “not being able to handle it”, “not having the know-how”, “not being ready”, “becoming homeless”…

The main underlying fear is fear of failure. Many people feel that if they ‘fail’, they will be judged, rejected, not respected, not loved….

THAT is the guaranteed way to live your life with regrets. The only way to fail is not even try. If you act and it doesn’t work the way you expected, you’ll learn, adjust your course, and keep going until you find what works.

THAT IS THE ROAD TO MASTERY.

Never give up on your vision, even if nobody else believes in it but you.

Be Unstoppable. You are a powerhouse of infinite possibilities.

  • Essential #5 for Creating Wealth and Success

Essential #5 for Creating Wealth and Success

Essential #5 for Creating Wealth and Success

Do you believe that the most authentic way to create wealth in your life is by helping other people have more of what they want?

I like the expression “authentic money”. That’s the money you make by authentic self-expression, by “doing” you. LOL

That’s the wealth you create by being authentically you – using your natural talents, skills, and experiences while making a difference in others’ lives.

And that’s the Essential #5 for Creating Wealth and Success:

Make a Difference, Enrich the Lives of Others.

    People who offer value

    • by solving or helping solve work / health / relationship / career / financial problems, or
    • by helping others achieve their goals faster and easier, or
    • by helping people feel good about themselves and their lives

get rewarded for enriching the lives of others.

    Would you agree?

Names that come to mind are Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Tony Robbins…

So, it is really important to become aware of the kind of problems you can help people solve…or  joyful / fun experiences you can help them have.

I love the quote by Neale Donald Walsch: “Your job is to help others get to where you are. Why do you suppose you know the terrain so well?”

People are willing to pay for enriching their lives – reducing/removing painful experiences, or having more joy and fun in their lives.

Also, I believe that you’ve got to be willing to GIVE first, BEFORE you start RECEIVING.

There are two extreme categories of people who offer services.

The first extreme group is the “Eternal Givers”. These people give, and give, and give….

They are afraid to over-charge, they are worried that nobody will buy from them because it might be “too expensive” for others, so they often charge NOTHING or waaaay below the offered value.

The Eternal Givers undervalue their services immensely and do a real disservice to their potential clients. WHY?

Because to stay in business, you’ve got to make profit. Period. End of story.

The second extreme group, the “Hard Receivers”, are people who get impatient with the wealth creation process and only focus on the receiving part. They feel that their time is too valuable to offer ANY services without charging…a lot.

It is my belief that there are no shortcuts in this principle. You’ve got to keep offering value first – willingly and joyfully – until you create an energetic momentum and get in the flow of abundance.

Most successful and wealthy people went through growth and maturing phases in their businesses before they became “rich and powerful.” Many were offering value for a long time before they started receiving the financial windfall.

The higher the perceived value of your offerings and the more lives you touch, the higher your financial and personal reward will be.

And it will happen on Divine time, which may be different from your expected time-frame. So, don’t get discouraged if you are still growing and building the momentum.

OK, one more important awareness that I want to mention here:

Pay attention to what place you offer your services from.

Is your main focus to make 5-6 figure per month?

Are you focused mostly on enriching yourself, becoming famous, and have more financial wealth for yourself?

Or you really desire to add TRUE value to the lives of others?

Really excited to help people solve their problems, become more confident, competent and successful while creating the life you want to have for yourself?

    One more thing….

If you experience resistance to your work, there could be a couple of reasons:

    1. Universe is testing your commitment and resilience,
    2. The work that you do does not support the Universal direction of expansion – for yourself and/or others.

    Does it make sense?

What do you think about this essential? I’d love to hear from you!

  • Essential #2 for Creating Wealth and Success

Essential #2 for Creating Wealth and Success

I want to share with you a true story that led me to a decision to include the Essential #2 into my list of principals for Creating Wealth and Success.

I own a successful real estate business and some time ago had the following conversation with one of my clients, Kate, who is a young married professional woman who has problems paying her rent and bills in general.

Kate: “You’re lucky, Millen. You’re wealthy, you don’t need to work, you have a nice car! You don’t understand how hard it is when you never have enough money. You don’t understand how it feels to be poor!”

Me: ” Actually, Kate, I was in much worse situation than you have right now… more than once.
I experienced being jobless and working for minimum wage jobs, being alone and depressed, broke and broken….

I had to learn how to FEEL wealthy even when I didn’t have much on my bank account. I had to learn how to become a savvy manager of my money so that I will be able to pay my rent and bills…save and invest.

I had to learn how to believe in myself, so I could eventually create a life I wanted to have.  So, it’s NOT luck. It’s the CHOICES that I made that led me to the life I have now.”

And that brings me to the

Essential #2 for Creating Wealth and Success:

Install and keep reinforcing supportive beliefs about yourself, money and wealth

Let me go over the WHAT, the WHY and the HOW.

    WHAT are Beliefs?

Repeatable thoughts, patterns of thinking, stories you continuously tell yourself when nobody else is listening….

The domain of your beliefs is your Subconscious Mind. You create your experiences by the CHOICES you make, which are determined by what you REALLY think and feel, which is the realm of Subconscious Mind.

When you were born, your subconscious mind was a blank slate… Have you noticed that little children have a natural sense of curiosity and excitement for life?

And then the programming started… “You have to be careful”, “you have to have a corporate job or be a doctor/lawyer to make a good living”, “you have to work REALLY hard to make money”, “you need to marry a wealthy man to have financial security”, “you are not the entrepreneurial type”, “being wealthy is not in your cards”, blah, blah, blah….

    WHY it’s important…

When you have ‘money blocks’ in a form of self-limiting BELIEFS around money, wealth and self-worth, you SEE the world THROUGH THESE FILTERS, through the filters of YOUR UNSUPPORTED BELIEFS!

When you don’t believe that wealth is possible for you, you repel, don’t pay attention to, or dismiss the wealth-building opportunities when they show up in your life.

Your beliefs about money, wealth, yourself, and what’s possible for you are pictured out in your life experiences and your financial situation.

Your state of sub-consciousness is reflected in your experiences. And your state of sub-consciousness is determined by your deep beliefs and feelings….

Yes, your experiences in life are affected by what you FEEL and THINK you deserve and can achieve. You only “see” the circumstances that confirm your beliefs.…

THAT’s why it’s important to BE AWARE of your deep hidden beliefs and CHOOSE which ones you want to “install”, nurture, give energy to.

    HOW to Install Supportive Beliefs

TRAIN your mind to acknowledge your successes, celebrate your WINS, become more intentional with your CHOICES, notice what works in your life, REINFORCE the behavior’s and beliefs that have helped you succeed in the past.

Establish DAILY wealth practices: meditation, journaling, counting your wins and actively appreciating what you have now, going for your wealth walks and using affirmations, asking “What if…” and “Why I can have/be/do…?” questions, etc.

If you don’t like where you currently are financially, you may ask yourself “What beliefs someone must have to manifest these experiences?” It’s the shortest and simplest way to uncover your hidden sabotaging beliefs.

Then you can ask “What actions someone could take to change this situation?”

You see, money is a special (metaphysical) mirror of your current values, thoughts, beliefs, and choices.

For example, if you keep spending more money than you make and don’t grow your savings, you may have a belief that you cannot manage your money well.

If you keep attracting clients who “cannot afford you”, you may have a hidden belief that your service is not really that valuable or that you are not “good enough” to charge your fees.

    You see how it works?

Your beliefs are tightly connected to certain emotions.

When you have supportive beliefs about yourself, you feel peaceful, uplifted, grateful, and joyful.
When you have sabotaging beliefs, you feel discouraged, jealous, sad, angry, fearful, or ashamed.

But don’t be afraid of experiencing “negative emotions”. Notice them…acknowledge them because negative emotions are your clues to the hidden beliefs that are NOT TRUE.

P.S. Do you still live in a world of “surviving”, financially? Or feel that someone else is luckier than you?
