  • 7 Steps to Regain Control Over Your Money: Step #7 – Be strategic with your money

7 Steps to Regain Control Over Your Money: Step #7 – Be strategic with your money

You work hard for your money – whether you are an employee or a business owner – you want to make more money. Right?

Well, how about managing your money strategically so that your money works for you and your family?!

That’s what Step 7 is about – BEING STRATEGIC with your money!

Here are some aspects of being strategic:

    1. Diversify your investments to maximize your results.

If you want to be a good investor you’ve got to know how to manage risk because ANY investment entails risk.

And diversification is one of the most important risk strategies.

When it comes to managing risk to maximize your return, it pays to diversify.

First, you can diversify among the four major asset classes: cash, stocks, bonds and real estate.

Once you decide on the amounts to allocate to these four main investment classes, it is important to diversify within each asset.

This means buying multiple stocks within a variety of industries, holding bonds of varying maturities, having different real estate properties in different locations.

In other words, don’t put all your golden eggs in one basket.

Also, don’t make the mistake of putting most or all of your money in “safe” investments like savings accounts, CDs and money market funds.

Over the long term, inflation and taxes will “eat up” the purchasing power of your money in these “safe investments”.

All investments involve some trade-off between risk and return.

Diversification reduces unnecessary risk by spreading your money among a variety of investments.

Besides diversification, the single most effective investment strategy is to invest continuously over time, with a long-term perspective.

    2. Grow your money by taking advantage Of tax-deferred Investments.

If your employer has a tax-deferred investment plan like a 401(k) or 403(b), use it!

Often, employers will match your investment.

And even if they don’t, no taxes are due on your contributions or earnings until you retire and begin withdrawing the funds.

Tax-deferred savings mean that your investments can grow much faster than they would otherwise.

The same logic applies to IRAs, although the maximum amount you can invest annually in an IRA is substantially less than what you can put in a 401(k) or 403(b).

    3. Use the protection provided by insurance

It’s wise to protect yourself, your family and your money by having an adequate insurance coverage.

A major lawsuit, unexpected illness or accident can be financially devastating if you lack proper insurance.

The key to insurance is to cover only financial losses so large that you could not cope with them and remain financially fit.

If someone is dependent on your income, you must have adequate life insurance.

Long-term disability coverage is important as long as you need employment income.

Also, be sure to carry adequate liability coverage on your home and auto policies.

To save on annual premiums, you may choose to raise your insurance deductible.

And whenever you purchase insurance – life, home, disability, or auto – be sure to shop around, and buy only from a reputable firm that has a history of being solvent and paying insurance claims.

    4. Plan your financial legacy

You want to have a will to ensure that your funds, property and personal items will be distributed according to your wishes.

A will is a legal document that ensures that your assets will be given to family members or other beneficiaries you choose.

Having a will is especially important if you have young children because it gives you the opportunity to assign a guardian for them in the event of your death.

Although wills are simple to create, about half of all Americans die without a will.

With no will to indicate your wishes, the court steps in and distributes your funds and property according to the laws of your state.

To prepare a will, take an inventory of your assets, outline your objectives and determine to which friends and family you wish to pass your possessions to.

Then, when drafting a will, be sure to include a name of a guardian for your children, name of an executor, and an alternate beneficiary.

Once your will is drafted, you won’t have to think about it again unless your wishes or your financial situation change substantially.

  • 7 Steps to Regain Control Over Your Money: Step #6 – Shop Smart

7 Steps to Regain Control Over Your Money: Step #6 – Shop Smart

Women shop differently than men. In general, women tend to love shopping and many see it as an entertaining activity. They are more likely to make impulsive purchases and often take advantage of special offers.

Men mostly buy just what they need right now – they go with a clear idea of what they are looking for and try to spend as little time as possible.

    Can you relate?

In order to spend less and save more, especially as a woman, you’ve got to become a savvy shopper. It’s not difficult. And the tips that I’m going to share with you here will help you buy what you need, spend less and save more. That’s what I call smart shopping.

You can save substantial amounts of cash when you become intentional shopper as opposed to emotional shopper.

    Ready?

Here are EIGHT TIPS for SAVVY SHOPPING:

    1. Plan your purchases in advance

Plan your purchase. Pause and get really clear about: Why do you need it? Where will you put it? What will you use it for? Who will use it?

If you don’t have compelling answers to these questions you will realize that you don’t really need to buy it at this time.

If you feel strong about your decision to buy the item, plan the day to go shopping and enjoy the fact that you made an intentional decision to buy it, not an impulsive one.

    2. Have a budget for your purchase

Have an approximate amount that you intend to spend on this purchase. This will help you be intentional about the amount you’re willing to pay and not get carried away with whatever price you see on the label.

Does it require some financial discipline? Yes. And it’s a good habit to have if you want to be a Wealth Builder instead of Wealth Consumer.

    3. Pay in full (cash or debit card)

When you are in a store and you see something that you really want or need, it’s easy to pull out a credit card and pay whatever the price may be.

However, if you are using cash or a debit card to purchase the item, you’ll have more awareness about the price that you’re about to pay because your amount is limited by the cash in your wallet or by the amount in your bank account.

    4. Buy older iterations of products

Retail price of the latest version of a product is always higher than the previous years model, whether it’s a phone, a TV or a car. While the newer version may have more features, you’re paying a premium price for these new features if you buy the product on release-day.

The same model will be priced significantly lower in just a year or two, so waiting a little longer can be quite lucrative. You may save hundreds or even thousands when you weigh the benefits of saving money on buying a good, but not the latest model of the product.

    5. Shop for clothing during the end-season

You like to look like a “million bucks”? Great! And it doesn’t have to cost you that much! You can find significant markdowns on clothing prices—50% or more—during the end of the season for clothes.

Retailers cut prices to get rid of things that are going out of season. It may worth your money to wait a few months to buy clothes you like at prices your wallet will love!

    6. Don’t be fooled by marketing

Stores are designed to entice you to spend money. Their strategies are subtle and effective.

Most use different lighting effects, colors, music, and items displayed in a certain way to entice you into buying more than you intended to when you came to the store. The same applies to online shopping – additional items are suggested to you when you buy anything.

Don’t fall for any of it. Be clear about what you came to the store to buy so you won’t get dazzled into overspending or buying something you didn’t plan for.

Buy quality items that are offered at discounted price but only if you need and want them, not simply because of the decreased price.

Finally, remember that sales people are trained to make you buy! It’s a good idea to ask questions about products, but don’t let them persuade you into buying it there and then. Take your time to make measured decisions.

    7. Negotiate

Very few people realize that you can negotiate many products’ prices with a seller!

Let’s say, you have decided on an item you want. You have found the best price, you chose your timing right, and you are ready to pay for it.

But wait! Always ask for “the best possible price” wherever you are or whatever you are buying. What is the worst that can happen?

Sometimes when the seller cannot offer any additional discount on the product, you may get a discount on a service or another item that you need to buy too! Negotiation is a great skill that you can develop and practice when you shop!

    8. Be mindful of timing when you travel

Prices on hotels, vacation rentals, airfare, and even rental cars are often much higher during certain days of the week, school and college breaks, and national holidays.

The travel industry knows that most people like to leave for vacation on Fridays and come back on Sundays. That’s why these days the prices on airfare, vacation rentals and hotels are higher.

Be smart and adjust your travel timeline so that you get a better deal. Shop around for plane tickets to fly out on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Saturday to take advantage of lower prices.

Also, the plane tickets usually cost less when bought in advance – plan your air travel in advance. Do price comparison for your favorite travel destinations to reduce your travel expenses further.

The Bottom Line: From shopping for groceries to shopping for a weekend getaway, spending money is a side effect of shopping (Get savvy about it!

  • 7 Steps to Regain Control Over Your Money: Step #1 – Declutter your environments

7 Steps to Regain Control Over Your Money: Step #1 – Declutter your environments

7 Steps to regain control over your money

Let’s get tactical and discuss the steps to regain control over your money.

Having the right environments is super important. That’s why you hear a lot about decluttering.

If you live in a home that is filled with clothes that you don’t wear and don’t like, boxes with magazines and souvenirs, pieces of furniture that don’t add anything to the comfort of your physical space, YOU CAN change it!

If you don’t have an environment that supports what you want to think, feel, createand experience, remind yourself that YOU CAN change it.

If you have a relationship that doesn’t make you feel supported, loved, and appreciated, that doesn’t spark joy in you – YOU CAN change it.

If you feel that you got yourself into a “money prison” because of accumulated  debt, or unhealthy spending habits, or arguing with your partner about excessive spending and feeling insecure about your financial future – YOU CAN change it too!

You can CHOOSE to be clear and intentional with your choices and change what’s not working for you.

You can move away or towards a different environment, or you can create a new energy in your current environment.

And whatever you want to change, start changing NOW by letting go of what’s not working for YOU!

You want to make a big leap? Great, go for it!

Feel like starting with small changes? Awesome!  Baby steps are great! It’s how you implement BIG changes without feeling overwhelmed.

Life is what you choose to make of it.  Whether it’s your physical environment, relationship, work, or money.

Living with your focus on past mistakes drains your energy, deflates your confidence, blocks the flow of wealth, joy, and new opportunities in your life!

That’s why decluttering your mental space is super important!

I recall the time in my life when I felt that I must change my environments – my work, my marriage, my financial habits (e.g. shopping therapy) – because I felt empty inside…I felt just existing, going through life instead of living it.

BUT I was afraid to change.

“What if”, “not yet”, and “not now” thinking kept me stuck in the environments that felt like desert. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a support system at that time.

My FEAR of “not having enough”, not being able to support myself, feeling financially insecure if I leave my marriage, kept me in a prison of my own making for years.

Until one day…I decided to change.

First, I asked myself “What is the worst thing that may happen?” Once I reconciled with the answer to this question, fear of consequences couldn’t keep me hostage anymore.

Then I asked “Why it may not be true that I cannot be financially secure without a man?” And the answers started pouring from my heart onto my journal.

And then…I asked “What needs to happen NOW so that I feel more ease, joy, and excitement about my life?” And the answer was clear and loud…

    DARE TO CHANGE.

If you tolerate environments that make you feel overwhelmed, not capable, not supported; the environments that deflate your confidence and sense of personal power – don’ wait for a better time. Or better circumstances. Or a “prince charming” to save you.

DO NOT WAIT TO BE SAVED.   YOU ARE YOUR SAVER.

Change might challenge you. You might need to juggle some things and make a few adjustments…

BUT it’s possible. And often necessary.

So that you step into your full power. Get in control of your money. Charge of your financial destiny.

And the first step is to attend to your environments and declutter your space.

Next I’ll share the next step to regain control over your money.

  • This ONE Thing Could Literally Change Your Life

This ONE Thing Could Literally Change Your Life

So, the 2018 is officially over with all the successes, challenges, breakdowns, breakthroughs, changes, and transformations.

It’s a NEW YEAR, a NEW AGE and a NEW PARADIGM!

And as I heard from one spiritual guru recently, the energy of this year is “Seize the day.”

In other words, when opportunity knocks, welcome it and run with it. And if challenges get on your path – don’t panic or curse your luck. Find a way to perceive them as…opportunities in motion. Opportunities to learn, grow, and expand.

This week, I had a privilege to speak to an amazing beautiful 94 years young woman. She has this special spark and charm that is hard to describe in words… One might guess that her life was easy, joyful and fun. Yet it was anything but easy…

During the WWII, she lived under Nazi’s occupation in Lithuania, escaped, became a refugee and lived in different countries before coming to America; was divorced, remarried, then lost her second husband to cancer…

She raised two wonderful daughters as a single mom, learned how to master her money, became an investor, achieved financial independence, and became an amazing painter after leaving her professional career as a chemist.

Her house looks like an art museum… Her many paintings reflect her rocky life journey.

So, I asked her if she could distill all her experiences and wisdom into ONE thing that really matters… ONE thing that helped her overcome enormous obstacles and go through many personal challenges…what would it be?

She looked at me, smiled and said: “The only thing that truly matters is whether you’re happy inside despite your life situations…” Then added softly “I am happy inside.”

“All the time?!”- I asked with some sense of astonishment in my voice.

“NO”, she responded. “Not all the time! About 95% of the time.”

    I smiled…

Can it really be THAT simple?

Yes, I believe it can. And it’s a matter of choice.

Today you can choose to focus on problems, react to challenges in your life, compare yourself, and feel powerless and unlucky…

    OR

You can choose to focus on solutions, on what “works” in your life.

You can choose to believe that you can do anything.

You can choose to release what no longer serves you.

You can choose to accept your current life situation and thrive for better.

You can choose to love yourself just the way you are, without any need to prove anything to anyone.

You can choose to better yourself and your life through new knowledge and expanded awareness.

You can choose a new way of being.

    It does not happen overnight.

It does not happen because it is a New Year.

It happens because you consciously choose every day what you give your attention to, what thoughts you allow to dominate, what words you use, what habits you practice, what boundaries you establish, and how you re-calibrate your feelings.

Be kind and loving to YOU. At least 95% of the time. LOL!

That’s my intention for 2019 in addition to helping as many women as I can to master their money and experience more EASE, PEACE and FREEDOM.

And that’s why I have a question for you.

If you could sit down with me for a cup of coffee, what would YOU want to ask me? What top one or two questions you’d like to ask me?

Just message me or write in the comments below your questions.

To your Health, Wealth and Freedom!

P.S. I’m serious! Go ahead and message me or write in the comments below your questions. What would you ask me?

  • Essential #7 for Creating Wealth and Success

Essential #7 for Creating Wealth and Success

Creating Wealth and Success with Millen Livis

Do you remember that in Essential #4 for creating Wealth and Success, I talked about the importance of feeling rich and living wealthy regardless of your current financial situation?

To feel rich and live wealthy, in addition to everything else that I shared with you earlier, you’ve got to take on the identity of a rich person! Start with thinking like a rich person and normalizing your new, wealthy reality and focus on experiences that confirm (to your own logical mind) that you already have wealth.

Make feeling wealthy your new NORMAL.

I encourage you to practice the following:

    1. Develop Confident Decisiveness – train yourself to take bold decisive actions and be responsible for the outcome.
    2. Be willing to take risk (calculated risk).
    3. Don’t be afraid of failures – see them as Valuable Growth Lessons. “Failures” are the bricks to your road to success. Many people “failed” their way to riches.
    4. Play to WIN, NOT not to lose (and be willing to leave the Good to welcome the Great).

    Fortune favors the bold.

So, the Essential # 7 for Creating Wealth and Success is:

    Be Willing to Take Risk.

You’ve got to be in a game and be OK with losing in order to learn and grow.Yes, you’ve got to PRACTICE taking decisive actions and be willing to take risk.

Not ‘gambling’ type of risk! Mindful risk.

And often this entails to be willing to leave the Good to welcome the Great.

Here’re some examples from my own life when I did exactly that:

    • Invested in the stock market to raise money for the down-payment on our first house
    • Left my marriage… left everything behind – the gorgeous house, the comfort of 2 incomes…and re-starting my NEW LIFE in a tiny apartment near my job.
    • Left my well-paid and prestigious Wall Street career and went back to the Business School in my mid 40’s, then started my own investment company
    • Started my wealth mentoring business, put myself out there to support other women on the journey to wealth and freedom. My remarkable life didn’t happen overnight. My CHOICES shaped me and my life’s trajectory.

And a few of these choices were risky. I was (for the most part) playing to WIN, NOT not to lose.  I was scared… often.

Yet I was willing (and it was REALLY scary) to Leave the Good in order to Welcome the Great.

Obviously, different people have different tolerance for risk. Be aware of your risk tolerance, respect it yet see if you can stretch it a bit…and a bit more…and more.

    Fortune favors the bold.

The suggestions offered here may feel like scary or crazy… Keep practicing them anyway.

Things will start shifting… your feelings will change, your energy will change….
You will start creating and experiencing forward-moving momentum.

Synchronizations and serendipitous experiences will be happening, you will start attracting good opportunities instead of repelling them.

Risk is embedded in any business or investing decisions.

Nothing is guaranteed in life (except taxes and death.)

BUT it doesn’t mean that you should stay away from any endeavors that involve risk, not at all!

    Instead, you’ve got to:

    • Become aware of your particular risk tolerance and;
    • Take decisions that involve measured/mindful risk so that your possibility for success exceeds the possibility of loss
    • Your loss will not put you into despair and make you lose sleep
    • Develop courage and Be Willing to Leave the Good to Welcome the Great.

  • Essential #4 for Creating Wealth and Success

Essential #4 for Creating Wealth and Success

What does “Think, Feel, and LIVE Wealthy” mean to you?

You might be surprised…but this is the essential #4 for creating Wealth and Success!

Yep. That’s right. And before you whisper “phew, I know that!”, let me elaborate.

For most people “living wealthy” means staying at 5-star hotels, going to fancy restaurants, wearing designer cloth, driving a luxury car, living in a gorgeous house….

    Guess what?

You don’t have to OWN it, you can SAMPLE it, then Create it!

You can experience that which you’d like to have before owning it!

    Yes, SAMPLE YOUR DESIRES!

You can go to car dealerships and ask to test-drive your favorite car.

You can meet with a realtor and ask her to show you houses that you’d love to live in.

You can visit these houses, FOCUS ON YOUR DESIRE to live in such houses, get super excited and motivated, and start creating your imaginary Wealthy Life though feeling it, sampling it, and…yes, “faking” living it as if you already have it.

What can you do to reinforce that?

The key is to affirm that you belong there and deserve that kind of wealth and abundance in your life.

You possess powerful faculties – AWARENESS, IMAGINATION, ATTENTION, and INTENTION – that you can use to create your NEW WAY of BEING.

Your new way of being could be feeling and having more wealth, or achieving financial independence, or buying a new car, or moving into a new house, or feeling more at peace, successful and confident.

So, what do you think about an idea that you can choose to think, feel and act abundantly to start creating financial wealth?

Frankly, I used to make fun of notorious “fake it until you make it” statement.

    But guess what?

    It works.

Let me share one examples from my own life.

When we used to live in New York, we would come to the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center around Christmas time, look at the beautiful view on the river, the yachts at the marina, the Christmas tree, the ambiance of wealth and success.

And I would imagine how cool it could be to work here. To be in this environment, this gorgeous place….

    Guess what?!

A couple of years later, I got a job with a company in this very building and we had amazing Christmas parties in this exact place, the Winter Garden!

    Coincidence? I don’t think so.

So, how does “fake it until you make it” work?

You can put yourself in a state of abundance, fullness, and wholeness by using your

    –        awareness (e.g. “I am creating a new way of being),
    –        physiology (e.g. abdominal breathing, adjusting your posture, relaxing your facial muscles and shoulders, eye contact, smiling,)
    –        psychology (e.g. shifting your perception about your current situation, focusing on and appreciating what you have, etc.),

and your life experiences will change.

If you’ve been struggling financially, most likely you’ve been blocked by your old conditioning that keeps you focusing on what’s missing, what’s not working…

If you PRACTICE looking, thinking, and acting abundantly, you’ll shift your attention, up level your energetic vibration, and begin to FEEL differently, which will start attracting new opportunities into your life.

And one more thing. The way you look – your outfit, your posture, your hair and facial expression – conveys your physiological and psychological states and your energy.

And people feel your energy without exchanging a single word with you. And most importantly, looking good feels good!

When you FEEL GOOD, YOU LOOK GOOD, and YOU DO GOOD.

Wear clothes that make YOU feel prosperous, confident, cool (and that means different things for different people)!

De-clutter your wardrobe from the old and unattractive stuff – only wear clothes and colors that reflect where you want to be not where you have been.

And it doesn’t have to be super expansive stuff either – just something that makes YOU FEEL GOOD.

    Follow your “FEEL GOOD” compass!

    Think, Feel, and Live Wealthy.

Deep transformations require patience and practice.

The suggestions offered here may feel like fake for some time…. Keep practicing anyway, keep training your mind without attachments. And have fun with it!

Things will start shifting, your feelings will change, your energy will change, and you will start attracting amazing opportunities instead of repelling them.
